I think that the refs have relaxed the new rules quite a bit recently as well. Each game I have watched recently there have been soooo many fouls called and soooo many free throws. Even though scoring was down and we didn't see a lot of crazy performances earlier in the season I enjoyed watching the games more and I hope that they don't continue to call ticky-tacky fouls, especially in the playoffs

I think you were true about the relationship between high individual scoring and team success, as you mention what happened in MJ when he was lowering his individual scoring. But I think it's a whole different especially with Lebron, because as we see, the lakers really need Lebron to score crazy number of points to get some win or at least to compete with good team until the last minutes of 4th quarters. But after all, I always love what u do, for always putting good NBA takes with neat of data and statistics. Until next time !!!

The point is more so that if a team DESPERATELY needs ONE guy to dominate offensively then your team is off to a bad start to begin with and your chances are nearly zero.
Jordan didn’t win a ring until Pippen showed up
Shaq didn’t win a ring till Kobe became the starting SG
LeBron didn’t win until he had D Wade
Oscar Robertson didn’t win until he joined Kareem on the Bucks

Ja just shared this exact same sentiment in his recent interview with Kenny. He was asked "30 points or 20 assists?" Without hesitation, he said "20 assists. I feel like a lot of guys can get 30, but not everyone can get 20 assists. I like to involve and trust my teammates."

    • Robert Musil

When everyone scores more you also get more assist. I don't get this obsession with numbers when teams have 120 points every night. Like no shit you get at least 20 assists when your team makes 120 if you play long enough. NBA doesn't defend anymore. Everyone looks good now.

@Tarcisio It's kinda weird, right? Like are you a selfish player if the defense lets you score fucking FIFTY points on them? Does that make you a scorer and not a passer if the defense put all their effort into preventing you from getting assists while giving you constant buckets? I imagine most people's logic would be to keep scoring until it stops working and then start dishing out the easy passes... but if it never stops working?

I think this generally happens every year, everyone starts off the season a bit slower, and then it picks up especially in February/March, slows back down a bit and into the playoffs we go. Albeit this season did start quite low in scoring, the new/stricter rules did mess up a lot of scoring. Nonetheless, the overall rule changes makes it a faster paced-higher scoring game. I hate the rule about 14 seconds left if offensive rebounded instead of a full 24. Thats such a random number too, why 14, not 10.12.16 or whatever. The actual rule they should change is the refs calling ridiculous technicals.

Although 71 points is amazing, Shaq is right, there isn’t a “I” in “team” and the reason the NBA player only score 30 is bc they aren’t selfish and their other teammates are just as good. So they give them the ball even if they could make theirs.

That David Robinson game was something special. Some people claimed the Clippers helped him but they were clearly doubling him and trying their hardest to make sure he didn't get 70. He shot mostly jumpers and shot 26-41, 63% for the game. Something Durant would have trouble doing.

NBA is very different from what we are used to. If you watch these games and the scoring you see multiple players are wide open and they simply don't pass because they have the hot hand. Even in these vids you can see teammates just stand around on offense. Add in the fact that defense is played very different and in some instances no defense at all is telling. Everyone shoots 3's now. The 80s, 90s, 2000s NBA was more of a team game and people played different roles on both sides of the ball. Players that hogged the ball were called out often.

Now I’m just sitting here imagining a prime David Robinson in today’s era. That would be interesting. He was next level mobile and agile for his size with a very well rounded game on both sides of the ball. Early in his career he was criticized and “undersized” due to his lack of bulk compared to the day’s other star Centers (which is hilarious at 7’1” and 230lbs.+)

That cockiness is why the US look like fools in the Olympics and World Cup games nowadays.

@Koury Steffani and you must very presumptuous cause I'm probably older than you. Your one game sample doesn't invalidate my point. Offense today is way better then it ever was. So the explanation for high scoring doesn't fall solely on the "no defense" argument. Regards

You didn't answer what I think is the biggest question - On average, how does a team perform when one its players intentionally dominates the offense? I'd guess that team performance falls off. Otherwise a team with two, or maybe three stars would assign one of them each night to be the designated ball hog. I suspect it harms team performance.

I definitely disagree with the statement that it would be a lot more entertaining to watch these players go for 50 every night. There’s a point where you just get desensitized to it. Also, as an NBA team going against these players, the key to winning the game just shifts to guarding the other four on the court a lot harder. If the stars are going to put up 70, why not shut down every one else. You can’t carry a game without your team and ultimately, it’s a lot more exciting to watch team basketball than a one man show.

@Silverfang 45 by "switching" you mean bad zone defense? because it's what it is... switching wasn't invented in 2022 you know?
and the statement of the NBA being better than ever talent wise is completely absurd. Many players you call "talented" lack of fundamentals is appalling. It's the rules changed, that allowed palming the ball and travelling, that made possible players dribbling with mediocre handles, it's the officiating not allowing any sort of contact or people occupying the lane that allowed offense being easier.
You have it completely wrong, pal, is the other way around from what you said. The NBA changed everything to make possible the game being a preposterous showoff closer to streetball than anything else. It's nothing to do with talent.
I'm appalled of watching how bad is footwork nowadays, how players doesn't know anymore to make a hook, a proper layup, a finger roll... and you're saying this is the most talented generation of players? 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂
don't be so delusional and let yourself fooled

    • Viejotrueno
      Viejotrueno 10 miesięcy temu

But what people seem to like, and the NBA is willing to offer, is one man show every freaking game... at some point it's possible that the NBA would become indoors street ball. One thing is the game influenced by playground style, which started at some point in the 70s or maybe slightly before, with the ABA... and another completely different thing is a continuous skills showoff and one on one abilities.
As a spaniard I still can watch european basketball, at least... what we lack regarding athleticism, we still treasure team game. I don't know what american true lovers of this game are going to do. Maybe rewatch again and again "old" games, from 2021 backwards

You could call me wrong on this and I wont deny it, but I truly believe this may have all started from Embiid going on a monstrous tear from late December to before the Harden trade; players like Jokic and Giannis were also doing their thing and I think maybe, just maybe other players realised big men may be taking the game way faster than they realise (most of these 50 point explosions are coming from forwards and guards). Interesting idea either way though and a quality video 👍🏾

@Rennis Dodman alot more carrying and travelling is allowed for show purposes, which makes being on the offenssive and catching a defender off-guard with a dribble that wouldnt be allowed normally alot easier. AI 's iconic crossover is a travel, james hardens stepback is a travel, the hesis when you havent dribbled the ball yet are often travels as they move their pivot before making a move to dribble. Its partially because offense has gotten better but also due to the fact that hard defense isnt allowed as much or relied upon and rules are loose on travels and ball handling

    • Rennis Dodman

watch the NBA. the narrative about weak defense is the most bullshit media talk
offence has no limits and players are practicing shooting with contested double teams
but with defence, theres limits. most you can do is double or put a hand in their face
the ball handling is improving so much from the 90s. thats why it looks like defence is weaker
but i bet you all the defenders in the old days have never defended people with insane ball control today
and also the shooting range is crazy now. centers shooting 3, guards shooting from logo
defense only looks weak because offence has developed so much. and defence has limits so theres not much u can do but double team.
honestly go watch games from 90s and compare to today.
defence is the same. but offence, is way better now so its harder to defend today

    Great video.
On the MJ reason to score more it's almost true what you said but let's not forget that MJ was scoring more prior than 1989 'cause coaches before Jackson use to give him the ball, but Jackson's strategy was to use the triangle so that more players were involved in offence and that was the main reason why the Bulls won so much, but MJ was actually accustomed to share the load of the offense even at NCU with Dean Smith who used the same strategy as Phil.
The real reason why we will probably never see anyone match MJ career 30 ppg is that today they prefer to spread the minutes so that players can all be involved, I don't remember another time in NBA history with so many games with even 4 or 5 players of all teams in duble figures as it is now, and it's great as players can perform better using their strenght instead waiting for the same one or two players to score.
The fun thing is that Nick Write said that MJ 3 ppg more than LeBron are pointless as MJ attempted more shots per game but as you explained of course the only way for today's players (for anyone actually) to score more is to attempt more shots and the fg% above 3 ft is still the same so they need to attempt more shots to score more, the only big difference I see is that back 20 years ago defenders could actually put a lot more pressure to scorers so one had to be pretty damn good, now most of the time shots from mid or from the perimeter are uncontested and the 3 point is almost a plague so you don't even go one on one or you are not double teamed as if they do so, you dish out to any teammate to attempt a 3, back in the days that was a strategy used as well but not to this extreme!

MJ was MJ. A phenomenon. Scoring champs dont win championships. Its only been done 8 times in NBA history and MJ has 6 of them, the other two being one for Shaq and one for Kareem. Also, the video didnt take into account how many games each of these guys has missed and its not few. They get tired or slightly injured, they ''load manage''. Try playing consecutive full 82 game seasons, see how easy it is to maintain that level of scoring.

I love how the video spent the whole time talking about why a high scoring single person performance isn't that remarkable and then at the end still tried to say that it was history to watch such a performance. Much less remarkable for a 50-60 pt game when you actually consider what it means. It isn't an achievement, it is a demonstration. If there is any achievement, it is in convincing your entire team to at as the platform to place the statue you are building of yourself. Comes off really selfish when you think about it.

Ja shot 73% overall with 100% on 3s.
Lebron shot 61% overall, 55% on 3s, and 92 fucking % on 13 free throws.
    Tatum shot 53% overall, and 53% on 15 3s.
    Kyrie shot 79% overall, and 75% on 12 3s.
    Lebron shot 72% overall, 67% on 9 3s, and 100% on 8 free throws.
KD’s 53 point game is the first one where it was mostly about how many shots he took.
    Trae shot 65% overall, 70% on 10 3s, and 100% on 14 free throws.
Trae’s 46 point night was just shooting a lot.
    KAT shot 61% overall, 64% on 11 3s, and 94% on 16 free throws.
    Steph shot 64% overall, and 50% on 14 3s.

@Frostshokula I was thinking the same thing. A huge factor is luck and being “in the zone”. Once they start making shots and feeling it, they take more shots. I don’t believe any of these players would just average 40pts because they decided to. When they have games where they score less than 20pts and shoot in the 30% range, are those conscious decisions? Clearly not. Sometimes you’re hot, sometimes you’re not.

    • Zaybriel Clanton

@Frostshokula 🤣🤣you can chalk it up to whatever you like. This just a random discussion. Nothing on the line for either one of us to care.
And I did provide evidence by mentioning a few players(including Bron who recently scored 50+) who themselves alluded to them cutting on a switch. And you speaking against them?
If that ain’t evidence enough, I’m gone chalk it up to you being too stubborn to change ya mind.

    • Frostshokula
      Frostshokula 10 miesięcy temu

      @Zaybriel Clanton
The only thing I’ll say is confidence level might go up once shots are falling and that might cause them to make more if being anxious would have an impact on whether they make or miss.
Outside of that, it’s mostly just luck if they have a game that’s a 20% outlier.
Unless you provide evidence, I’m gonna just chalk up anything you say as conjecture and leave it at that.

I feel like if this were the case, we would see more players trying to do this and failing, like not every player who wants to score 50 will and we would also see more terrible efficiency nights with people tryna do this and just not getting it that day. Also a lot of these were necessary to win the game (Tatum vs Brooklyn) not just to put up the numbers. This is a great trend in the NBA to explore the explanation behind tho and I love the video

Just another anecdote: In the last game of the 96-97 season, Jordan and the bulls were playing the Knicks. The bulls had 69 wins at the time (following their 72 wins a season prior) and Jordan needed a high number of points (I think 50 or 60, don't remember exactly) to reach an AVG. of 30 for the season. Phil Jackson gave him the green light to shoot all night, assuming they will win and get to 70 wins for the season - 2 birds... But, it didn't go as planned, and Jordan was missing too many shots. The Knicks probably knew this and were prepared. The bulls ended up losing that game.

Hi Jimmy, long time watcher, first time commenter. Your videos are always great! But I can’t help but wonder about all of the commentary at the beginning of the season about how difficult it was to shoot with the new Wilson ball. Do you think it took this long for players to get acclimated to the feel of the new ball? And do you think that has any bearing on the amount of high scoring we are seeing now? Thanks for all you do.
    P. S. I would love to see some more stuff produced by you about team USA basketball in the Olympics. Thanks again!

I know I’m no Jimmy, but I wouldn’t think players would only now be beginning to get used to the new Wilson ball this late in the season. Obviously the players would have known of this change before the season’s start and had been practicing with it throughout the offseason, then you plus on all of the regular season games and reps in between games, etc. It makes sense for a change of ball to have an impact on a players shot but I don’t think what we’re seeing now this late into the season is influenced greatly by the change.

Seriously disagree with this. Shooting % go down for most when taking 30+ shots because they have to force it more, also I remember when Gilbert said he was going to score 60 before a game one time and scored an extemely inefficient 9 points. Yes if they wanted too they could score more obviously but the defenses are going to focus on that person more and make it harder to score if they are going to try and score 50 every night. Kobe would get tripple teamed a lot to prevent it. Todays lack of defenses just make it easier to go off.

one factor to consider is that we are close the end of the regular season and fatigue/injuries starts to have a bigger impact. It was already near impossible to defend the elites mentioned at the start of the season. Also this year was much more physically demanding given the new rules which could be yet another factor.
it would be interesting to see stats comparing defense vs offense at the start/end of seasons, how they trend over time, and how it compares with playoff season.
Whatever the factors are, 2022 has been the most entertaining season since 1998 Jordan days.

Wrong 2018 and 19 were way better than this season because players like Harden were scoring 40 and 50+ points almost every single game and they were red hot shooting the ball almost every night and not putting up so many shooting slump games like what's been happening to almost every Superstar in the League for stretches of games, weeks and months this whole season plus there were no Play in Tournament's back then like there are today and players were allowed to lean into defenders and initiate contact back then which we can no longer do in today's game which has made the game worse because it's already bad enough that players are afraid to play defense because playing defense has become a foul and now since players can't initiate contact to get to the Free Throw line anymore players are now becoming afraid of contact and not even trying to drive to the basket as much anymore because the refs are either going to call an offensive foul on them or let the play keep running even on plays that should be called a foul.

8:45 this has a flaw, your assuming that he will he have the same shooting opportunities in each game, he is taking less shots in some games then others for a reason it's not just because he doesn't want to, if he suddenly decided to take 24 fga's every game regardless then those avg's would most likely suffer because he would be forcing shots. you could in theory probably say that about half the players in the NBA could put up 40+ every game if they just took enough shots.

You're right about all the players you mentioned going off for big nights in March being able to average 40 in a season, except for curry. He couldn't average 40 in a season. First off, he scored his big march total against the Washington wizards, one of the worst teams in the association. Before he got hurt, we both know he wasn't gonna come close to 25 pts the other night against boston. Also, you are forgetting that curry carried the team last year and scored as many points as he could every night. By the end of the year, his average was a pitiful 32, not no 40. The other guys you mentioned could average 40+ cause the box-and-1 won't work on them. It does work on curry. That's how you know he ain't a great play. There shouldn't be a defense any team can create to stop the other teams best player, and there isn't one, except for the box-and-1 against curry. He's too small physically and mentally to be on your list.
